Recipe for Low- Phosphorus Dog Food ~ Caring for a Dog with Chronic Renal Failure. After 1. 8 years, Ben, my longtime dog, was diagnosed with chronic renal failure three months ago. Failing some other catastrophic illness, his vet of 1. Having said that, Ben still clearly has a lot of life and love left in him and so neither of us are throwing in the towel. When I first received the news of Ben’s condition, I was heartbroken and I grieved . I couldn’t imagine losing him; I couldn’t imagine a life without him. But after a few days immersed in the sadness of the future, I turned my attention back to the present . I’m lay person with a great propensity for doing research and learning. What I’m presenting is, therefore, a layman’s understanding of things — and my approach has been devised in consultation with Ben’s amazing veterinarian and pharmacists. I’m hoping that in keeping this post simple, however, that my distilled research and understanding will be easy for those of you with similar battles in front of you, now, or in the future. Ultimately, this is a post and recipe written by a man who loves his dog above all else these past 1. I wouldn’t do for him . Often when we hear about kidney disease, or least when I’ve heard mention of it in the past, it has been related to protein levels in the diet. That’s not to say the protein is the cause, but that once renal failure sets in, protein in the diet becomes a concern. This is why people and animals with chronic kidney disease are often given a protein- restricted diet. Well, what I learned is that the issue isn’t with protein specifically, but what accompanies the protein: protein isn’t the problem and Ben couldn’t live without protein either. The issue is that when the kidneys stop to work at their full function, certain things are not being filtered out and excreted and this creates an imbalance in our blood chemistry. Of particular concern in a mature dog like Ben who has no real pathology but who has simply outlived his kidneys (rare in a dog but more common in cats) is the reduced ability to excrete phosphate and, conversely, retain calcium. This is a double whammy because the body uses calcium to bind with the phosphorus as part of the excretion process. As a result, over time phosphorus levels rise and accumulate in the body’s tissue which causes multiple system issues and in particular, as kidney the disease progresses, cardiovascular complications become more and more likely. In short, there are two outcomes in Ben’s immediate future: heart attack/stroke or multi- system failure which will require the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make . You see, phosphorus occurs most abundantly in protein rich foods, but it occurs to some degree in almost all food and ingredients. But before I sing out my solution, there is something else to this story: it is not as simple as omitting or limiting phosphorus. Dogs still need other nutrients and in the end it is about balance — it means, to the best of our ability, equipping the dog (Ben) with what they need while omitting what is going to shorten life. And yet, even at that, there is one more thing you can’t forget — and that this isn’t simply a chemistry experiment: it’s food. That is to say, what I created had to not only be good for Ben, he had to like it enough to eat it. And remember, Ben is a dog that I’ve been feeding and largely cooking for since the beginning: he has discerning palette, to say the least. ![]() ![]() The Research and the Goal: One of the symptoms of renal failure is an acidic tummy and nausea. The result of this is reduced food drive and weight loss which was a telling symptom in Ben. Smaller and more frequent meals have played an important role for him. And while I have chosen to use some supplements in his diet, I’ve largely tried to rely on “functional foods” and variety in his diet to provide him his necessary nutrients. The goal, therefore was to choose: Good “fats” rich in calories and other necessary compounds. Proteins rich in nutrients. ![]()
Carbs and veggies high in vitamins and with sufficient soluble fibre — this will . Pepcid AC)Things to avoid: Phosphorus obviously. Omega 6 fats (because they’re inflammatory)Sodium (because with renal failure, blood pressure will increase and the sodium will become a killer)Vitamin D (because this is hard for the kidneys to excrete as well)I did a LOT of reading. I read and read and read, trying to discern what to feed him, what the trade- offs were in nutrients and what ultimately he would still eat. One of the best sources I found was from a Phosphorus Food List (PDF) published by Kaiser- Permanente (a huge, integrated healthcare company in the USA) and from info on that Mayo Clinic’s website on a low- phosphorus diet. I cross referenced this information with dog food diets, labels of dog food ingredients, and numerous other sources. ![]() In the end, this is what I determined. Many have added their own research and information. Some have different opinions and every dog is different with unique tastes or other underlying conditions, but most people have independently supported this recipe with other research or discussions with other health professionals. One reader, Kerrie E., went to a nutritionist and posted the advice she received here as well. I’ve summarized her information as a PDF attached here. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() List of Ingredients to Work With. Protein Sources: Lean Ground Beef; duck; white fish; and egg whites; ground pork (moderate, but tasty). Using these options, I’ve ultimately cooked Ben four different recipes so far. Each provides about 6 packages with enough food for about 1. And I vary the packages every couple of days to make sure he’s getting nutrients from a variety of sources. My closing tip is, before you package up the dog food, taste it because, if you don’t like it, he/she probably won’t either. Don’t be squeamish — these are 1. Total time: 9. 0 minutes (includes cooling and packaging)Servings: 1. How Much to Feed Your Dog: I’ve added this in as a further postscript because it is the single most frequent question I’ve been getting over the years. The answer is simple but, I know, unsatisfactory: “It depends.” As I say to everyone, each dog trying this diet is different and unique. There are too many variables for me to answer. It depends on size, breed, age, metabolism, stage of disease, and other factors that make each dog special. Your daily values may be higher or lower depending on your calorie needs. The original frequently asked questions for the newcomer on the popular raw diet for dogs, BARF, an acronym for Biologically Appropriate Raw Food or Bones And Raw Food. My advice is simple, however. You know how much he/she would normally have eaten. As well, dogs with renal failure or disease are usually in a state of “not eating” and are prone to “wasting.” That is to say, they’re slowly starving to death. As such, let your companion be your guide. They will tell you if they want more or need more. Assuming their not overweight or have other diseases, let them eat till full is my personal recommendation. That’s what I did with Ben . I hope this helps you all — but if you need more advice, speak to your vet. Low- Phosphorus Dog Food. INGREDIENTS: ** Note (August 2. A number of readers have raised concern about the garlic powder in this recipe because of research that it is toxic to dogs. To be clear, the quantity I used was very small (a sprinkling = 1/4 teaspoon). Judge me or disagree with me, but Ben ate garlic in food for his whole life because he ate table food/scraps from my plate and rarely was there a meal that didn’t include it as a seasoning. As stated, I’m not vet or doctor so I can’ tell you at what levels it is safe or not safe for a dog of whatever weight. All I know and all I share here is what I did for my dog that lived 1. In the end, it is listed as optional, but I used it. While substitutions are possible and even recommended to . Many readers are frustrated at the effort to peel an acorn squash. But note the nutritional breakdown on the side here with respect to other winter squash and their overall nutritional ratings (beyond phosphorus): DIRECTIONS: Cook the rice by following the package instructions (e. Prepare the parsley: wash; remove leaves from stems; and finely chop the parsley. When the rice is finished cooking, remove lid and stir in the chopped parsley. While the rice is cooking, cut the squash in half and remove the seeds. Cut the squash into strips, lengthwise between the “ridges” — using a vegetable peeler, peel the skin from the squash. Cut sqash into cubes and place it in a medium pot with enough water to fill half the pot. Bring to boil and simmer, covered, for 2. Remove from water and discard water. Steam the green beans, whole. Place the ground beef in a frying pan and fry for about 8- 1. Season with fresh ground pepper and garlic powder. Do NOT drain off the fat, but let the meat cool. Once the ingredients have cooled to “warm,” place them in a food processor or powerful blender (e. Combine in 1/2 the squash, 1/3 of the ground beef, and half the beans . Repeat with the remaining squash, another 1/3 of the beef, and the remaining green beans and add them to the rice mixture as well. Add in the remaining beef, including all the beef fat. Using the same pan from the beef, now, melt 1- tablespoon of coconut oil. When hot, add in half the egg whites and scramble them until thoroughly cooked (about 4 minutes). Repeat with more coconut oil and remaining egg whites and add them to the other ingredients and stir them in. This is why I use the garlic powder. Test some with your “patient” who will be standing by — and make sure he/she likes it too. Success! You’re now ready to bag the food in sealable sandwich bags and place four- to- a- bag inside a larger freezer bag. Hoping your own fido patient love this as much as Ben. Serve in 1/2 cup measures 4- 5 times per day. Elevated Liver Enzymes in Dog. Home / Blog / Elevated Liver Enzymes. A year ago at Jake’s annual checkup a senior panel was done and his Alk Phos level was elevated at 3. We had follow up 3 and 4 month follow up testing and it was unchanged. No other values were elevated at that time. We had our annual checkup last week and the results of his liver enzyme panel were not good. This time not only was the alk phos elevated to 6. Obviously this was very disheartening as he is clinically asymptomatic. He shows no signs of any problems associated with these results. I immediately got on the internet and started reading to understand more about the potential for liver disease and found your foundation website. I wanted to tap into your experience and knowledge and hopefully get some feedback from you. We have an appointment Monday for xrays. My concern is this is the first time other enzyme levels have been elevated and could this be a fluke or testing error!! I found a round table discussion on this and it suggested repeating the test in 2 to 3 weeks to substantiate the results. I need to have this discussion with my vet and will do so Monday. Another concern is what I am feeding Jake. About six months ago I put him on a raw food diet (Primal). I tried to find info to see if this could be potentiating a liver problem. The only supplements he is on are kelp and a probiotic. I did have him on milk thistle when the initial alk phos level was elevated but only did this for two months. He has been on other nutritional supplements for skin and coat but I stopped those. I forgot he is also on organic coconut oil. There is a local health food store that specializes in dog nutrition and I have been following some of their recommendations for maximizing Jake’s health. Other than this Jake has had occasional ear , skin, and pad issues but for the most part had remained in good health. I might also add we exercise regularly, walking twice a day weather permitting. Needless to say I am quite concerned and any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. I am considering requesting a consult to see an internal vet specialist. I have some other questions about further testing such as serum bile acid. I might also add that I am in medicine myself and knowing what I know about the human element heightens questions and poses trust issues in the care and treatment of Jake!!! I have had some unpleasant vet experiences and just changed vets so at this point my confidence level is being tested and it scares me. Physicians Weight Loss Centers. A First Cycle for Beginners. Update: I have a new article that has more details for the beginner to follow, including sourcing gear, medical supplies and injection techniques. I would recommend starting there is you want a good guide for beginners to follow. Some people recommend a heavy stack for your first cycle in the belief that your most impressive gains are to be had. However that same advice would also lead you to having the most severe side effects and health damage as well. Your first cycle needs to be simple to administer, relatively inexpensive and as safe as possible and its with this in mind that I created the following beginner cycle. Your first steroid cycle. Weeks 1- 1. 0 – 5. ![]() ![]() ![]() Test Enanthate. Weeks 1- 1. Arimidex EODWeeks 1. Nolva 2. 0mg/twice daily. Weeks 1. 5- 1. 6 – Nolva 2. ![]() ![]() ![]() Hardcore Bulking methods through proper diet, training and anabolic steroids. Phase 3 by Gavin Kane. Why Trenbolone Can Be A Valuable Addition To Your Cutting Cycle by warrantweb. Trenbolone Acetate is a top contender for the title of best anabolic steroid. ![]() So lets quickly talk about this cycle. You will notice it is a Test E only cycle and I did this for a number of reasons. Firstly Test E has a longer ester (remains in your system longer) meaning you don’t have to inject as often and there is far less chance of pain with your injections. Secondly Test is the most common steroid used and most stacks/cycles are built around it. By using it first and by itself you can see how your body reacts to it and what if any precautions you may need for future cycles to avoid unpleasant side effects. Lastly its extremely effective, it will give you excellent gains in both mass and strength, which is the whole point. The Arimidex is an anti- aromatising product that will limit the side effects of the Test E (which I will go into more detail later). If you start to notice sides you can up the Arimidex to 0. It continues for 2 weeks after your last Test injection because it remains in your system for 2 weeks afterwards and will continue to have aromatsating effects. Nolva (or Nolvadex) is a PCT (post cycle treatment) product that will help you restart your natural testosterone production (see here for why it is necessary). Without it you not only stand a good chance of losing gains you have made on cycle, but you will hinder your chances of future muscle growth as well. Any time you plan a cycle you should plan and purchase your PCT with it, this is probably the most common trap new users fall into and the failure to properly plan can have long lasting effects. How To Inject. The second follow- up question I always get when I give people the first cycle is “can I do orals instead” or “I don’t know how to inject”. Yes you can do orals instead a Dbol only or Anavar only stack is not to bad, but if you are serious and don’t want to avoid liver risk then injections is the only way to go. I won’t re- invent the wheel here but here is an excellent and comprehensive guide to injecting that has helped a lot of people to start: http: //www. The next question is inevitably “where can I get needles”. Well in Australia the best place to try is your local health clinic which is different from your local medical centre or hospital clinic. Simply search “health clinic” in Google and you should find one near you. Should you be starting your first cycle. You will do what you want anyway but I thought it relevant to at least give my opinion on the topic. It’s important to remember that steroids are performance enhancing drugs, so if you are not performing already then you best get started before touching a needle else you will risk all the side effects without any of the gains. Under 2. 1Absolute no- no. You are still growing and steroids will stunt your growth. See here for more info. ![]() Training for less then 2 years. There are a number of issues here. Firstly you have so much potential natural growth you shouldn’t need steroids anyway. Secondly steroids require a commitment and if you are just jumping in the gym and just as likely to quit you will be throwing money away and possibly getting a number of sides to go with it. Lastly your muscles grow faster then your tendons, jumping straight in the gym and on the gear will place a lot of strain on your tendons in terms of weight lifted, extra muscle and a loss of collagen. I talk more about this here. Diet and Training is poor or erratic. There is no reason to touch steroids if you can’t get your own house in order first. If you are not dieting and training well then steroids won’t help you, end of story. Your Heavily Overweight. Similar story if you can not get yourself into shape without steroids you won’t be able to do it with them either. Also the risk of side effects such as aromatisation increases with the amount of bodyfat. Your Emotionally Unstable. Steroids generally accentuate your emotions. So you reach higher highs, and lower lows and if you are having issues prior to use such as depression or anxiety then steroids will make this worse. Best to be in a good headspace before going on cycle. Side Effects. Its not all muscle and strength with Test unfortunately. The most common issues with Test come from the aromatsing effect (converting testosterone into oestrogen), which can cause sides such as: Gynecomastia (Gyno), water retention, high blood pressure and cholesterol issues to name a few. As mentioned previously your best bet is to up the dosage of arimidex if you notice any of these sides. With Gyno look for sore, red or itchy nipples as early symptoms. For more info on the sides and how to treat them click on any of the links above. Conclusion. I hope this helps a lot of you rookies out there. We all started in the same boat and I think its important to realise and then remember that steroids are a long term solution and whilst they work well, the results will only remain as long as you have the fundamentals of dieting, supplementing and training down. Remember as well that Google is your friend, the amount of information out there is incredible, and you should be educating yourself as much as possible taking particular attention to the thousands of case studies of guys who have been through what your about to start. If you still have any questions though please leave a comment below and I will most likely add it to this post. Good luck, stay safe and grow big! To purchase legal steroids, guaranteed to get past customs, then the place to go is anabolics. If you want real steroids then you can't beat the range and price of Napsgear. The only issue is getting your orders past customs. He can be found at gear- oz. What to Eat and Avoid. Disclaimer: Results are not guaranteed*** and may vary from person to person***. A blood type B diet can be a life- changing alteration for people who have this type of blood. Few people give much thought to what their blood type is, and might only do so when a hospital emergency arises or should a nurse happen to mention their type when giving blood. But blood is more than the liquid life force running through our veins—it may be the key to determining how to best feed the body for optimal health. A blood type diet is unlike any most people are likely to have encountered. There are four main blood types: A, B, AB, and O. Antigens are what determine the type of blood you have; interestingly enough, people with blood type O have no antigens, which is a handy way to remember it. Ad. In 1. 99. 6, naturopathic physician Dr. D’Adamo wrote a wildly popular book, Eat Right for Your Type. The foods you eat for your blood type will obviously depend on which type you have, and each list for the four main types is very different. It should be noted, however, that Dr. D’Adamo’s claims have not been substantiated by the medical community, and the links made between blood type and incidence of disease are considered tenuous. Before embarking on any major dietary change, it’s always best to talk to your doctor first. With that in mind, let’s take a look at Dr. ![]() ![]() ![]() D’Adamo’s diet for blood type B. A low FODMAP diet cuts out many common products that contain certain foods. The principle behind the diet is to give the gut a chance to heal, especially if you have. D’Adamo, those with blood type B are considered The Nomad, that is, if you trace their lineage far enough, you’ll find that they are descended from ancient nomadic tribes and thus have specific dietary needs. These people have strong immune systems, a tolerant digestive system, and are the most flexible in available dietary choices among all the blood types; they can also eat a lot of dairy. A blood type B diet food list warns against eating corn, buckwheat, lentils, tomatoes, peanuts, and sesame seeds because these will cause weight gain. It was in 1. 81. 8 that a British obstetrician, James Blundell, performed the first successful transfusion of human blood while treating a patient affected by postpartum hemorrhage. However, the concerns regarding the safety of blood transfusions were addressed when Karl Landsteiner came up with the classification of blood types in four main blood groups in 1. Understanding Blood Groups. There are about 2. International Society of Blood Transfusion. However, ABO system remains the most significant blood group system. A person is classified as having A, B, O, AB type blood depending upon the antigen present on the RBCs. If antigen A is present, then a person has blood group A. Similarly, one's blood group is identified ad B, if antigen B is present. If both the antigens are present, then the person's blood group is AB, while absence of either antigens denotes blood group O. ABO blood typing is often combined with Rhesus blood group system. Rhesus or Rh system is concerned with the presence of antigen D on RBCs. Thus, if Rh(D) is present in a person along with his ABO blood type, he is considered to be of Rh positive blood type. Similarly, absence of Rh(D) indicates an Rh negative blood type. Thus, the human population is widely classified into A+, A- , B+, B- , O+, O- , AB+ and AB- . B Negative Blood Type. Now that you know the basics of blood group typing, it would be easier to understand, what B negative blood type signifies. Simply put, it indicates presence of antigen B without antigen Rh(D). Generally speaking, negative blood types are rarer than the positive ones. B negative blood type is second rare, with AB- being the rarest. The race and ethnicity of a person also plays a vital role in determining the blood group of a person. Caucasian population has the highest percentage of B negative blood group when compared with other races. Risks. Apart from the fact that type B negative blood is rare, there are certain other risks involved. These risks are peculiar to all the negative blood groups. The main risk is during pregnancy, when the mother is Rh- and the fetus is Rh+. Human body has a tendency to build antibodies against anything that is foreign to our body. Naturally, baby's blood is no exception as it comprises antigens from the father (which are foreign to the mother's body). In response to these antigens, the immune system builds antibodies of type Ig. G and Ig. M. The antibodies for the major blood groups ABO are of type Ig. M while those for Rh(D) are of type Ig. G. The antibodies of type Ig. M are large and cannot be transported through placenta, all the way to the baby. However, type Ig. G antibodies easily enter the placenta and are transferred to the baby, to attack his antigens. This can induce some risks for the baby, during the pregnancy and the mother, after the childbirth. These risk factors can be minimized by immunizing the mother with Ig. G antibodies in the third trimester of pregnancy. B Negative Blood Type and Blood Donation. B negative blood type people can only receive blood from either their own blood type donors or O negative donors. People with this blood type benefit the most from double red cell donation type. It allows two units of double red blood cells to be donated at a time. Also, it is necessary to match the race and ethnicity of the donor and the recipient while donation. These days, diet based on blood group types is gaining popularity. Thus, if you are a B negative person, you sure would want to know about which diet suits your blood type the best. People with this blood type can benefit from eating meat and dairy products, while chicken and bacon should be avoided. Make the best of this information to attain a healthy lifestyle. Changing your diet will HELP you lose weight, but in the majority of patients it's really just one step. You may lose 5- 2. NOT get you back to your normal weight if your thyroid is under dosed. ![]() I've written extensively about . The most important part is picking the diet best for YOUR body. The the case of Hashimoto's this attack occurs on the thyroid gland itself! If left untreated over long periods of time this will ultimately result in the destruction of your thyroid gland tissue. That means your thyroid won't be able to produce thyroid hormone anymore and you will be left with supplementing with thyroid hormone.. It doesn't sound pretty, but here's the deal: You can reduce and even prevent the attack on your own thyroid by making some targeted changes. That means you have to address ALL causes of inflammation including: Dietary allergies and antigens. Gut Imbalance (Dysbiosis, SIBO, Gut infections, Leaky Gut, etc.) Physical, Emotional and Physiological stressors. Chemical Toxins and Endocrine Disruptors. Nutrient Deficiencies. Lifestyle changes including improved sleep, exercise and stress reduction techniques. Doing just one of these is a recipe for failure.. There is almost no question that your diet may increasing inflammation in your body, but it's certainly not the only culprit. And in order to reduce all inflammation, each area must be addressed. So diet (while probably the MOST important aspect of reducing inflammation) is really just the beginning.. I've successfully used all of these diets in my patients to help them feel better, lose weight and reduce antibody levels. When it comes to following a diet the truth is you really will get 9. So don't get caught up in all the nuances, instead just focus on sticking to the plan. Food Sensitivity Diet (Elimination Diet). In the most basic sense you simply remove these foods from your diet and then monitor how you feel. There are two ways to do this diet: 1. Blood testing for food sensitivities: Find specific foods that you are sensitive to using delayed Ig. G food sensitivity testing. Testing for Ig. G antibodies will find food *sensitivities* that you may be reacting to, but may not be allergic to. You can find more information in the video below: When most people think of food allergies they think of allergies to foods like shellfish and tree nuts which may cause swelling of the face airways leading to potentially life threatening situations. We aren't talking about food allergies like these. Instead we are talking about sensitivities to certain foods that may make you react with low grade inflammation, . Why? Because your reaction to the food might be delayed by up to 4. AFTER eating the food you are sensitive to. Eliminate foods systematically: Instead of getting the Delayed Ig. G blood test you can simply remove the major food groups that most people are sensitive to for 3. This allows enough time for the inflammation to cool down, your GI tract to begin healing and most of the other symptoms you may be experiencing to resolve. Once you've eliminated your symptoms (and only if you have eliminated your symptoms) you can then begin to slowly reintroduce these food groups back into your body while monitoring how you react. I've found that this type of diet can be difficult for patients who like things to be black and white. Sometimes people just don't want to give up their favorite foods even if they react poorly to them, so if you fall into this category it may be a good idea to just get the food sensitivity test to see which foods you need to avoid. You can find an example below of the various phases of the elimination diet: ! The combination of going gluten, dairy, soy free + removing any foods you may be sensitive to by checking your delayed Ig. G antibodies is one of the most effective methods for determining which diet your body needs. It may be necessary for some people but you can get started right away by eliminating the 7 most common reactive foods (listed above). Autoimmune Paleo Diet (AIP). The AIP diet is felt to be one of the best diets to reduce antibody levels in Hashimoto's but it is also one of the most restrictive diets out there making it difficult to sustain for long periods of time. To see a case study of one of my patients using AIP to lose weight and feel better please see this post. According to group data 7. Auto Immune Paleo Diet. There are two varieties of problems that people can have as it relates to gluten: 1. Celiac's disease: People with this condition have an autoimmune response when introduced to the protein which results in damage to the intestines, inflammation and MANY other signs and symptoms. Patients with this condition typically have elevated blood levels of Gliadin, Transglutaminase- 2 and Endomysium which you can find on serum testing. This damage leads to increased intestinal permeability (. Obviously not something you want going on in your body, but what about non celiac gluten sensitivity? Is it even a real thing? It turns out it is and its supported by plenty of data.. Non- celiac gluten sensitivity: . Traditional blood tests to gluten are all negative which may make patients falsely believe that they can tolerate gluten without a problem. Unfortunately non celiac gluten sensitivity still causes plenty of problems both in the intestinal tract and outside of the intestinal tract and that's one of the ways that some experts recommend diagnosing the condition: Intestinal symptoms: Bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhea, epigastric pain, nausea, gas, acid reflux, IBS like symptoms and constipation. Extra intestinal symptoms: Fatigue, headaches, anxiety and other mood changes, brain fog, numbness/tingling, joint and muscle pain and skin changes including rashes or random outbreaks. Do you have any of these symptoms but negative blood tests to Celiac's disease? Or have you removed gluten in the past and felt better when you did? Only to find out that your symptoms return when you start eating it again? If so then you might have non celiac gluten sensitivity. In addition to the symptoms listed above NCGS can also cause increased inflammation and increase intestinal permeability just like Celiac's disease leading to much of the same increased risk of developing autoimmune diseases. For this reason (and many others) it's best to just avoid gluten all together if you have Hashimoto's whether you have celiac's disease or non celiac gluten sensitivity. In my experience up to 8. Hashimoto's have some improvement when going gluten free. Occasionally sticking to a gluten free diet can be difficult if the patient isn't serious about removing all sources or if they aren't careful. Even when I consciously went gluten free I continued to find small sources of contamination in food products and condiments month later. All patients with Hashimoto's (Going gluten free for 3 months should be standard for any newly diagnosed Hashimoto's patient)Patients with a family history of Celiac's disease, Hashimoto's or other Thyroid problems. People who have chronic migraines, chronic headaches, acne or multiple gastrointestinal symptoms. Quick Tip: Most people benefit from going gluten free (even if you decide on a different diet you should still ALSO be gluten free for 3 months). Don't fall into the trap of thinking that if you have negative antibodies to gluten that you are fine to eat it. Most people do MUCH better cutting out gluten. The paleo diet consists of real whole food that attempts to mimic the diet of the paleolithic man/woman and removes inflammatory industrial seed oils, GMO food products, refined grains and added sugar. Put into a simple graphic: . One of the dangers of going paleo is actually reducing your carbohydrates too much, because the most common sources of carbs are generally forbidden. While reducing the amount of carbohydrates can be good in certain medical conditions (leptin and insulin resistance), reducing all sources of carbohydrates can result in worsening fatigue in some patients. Another potential pitfall of eating a paleo based diet is consuming too much protein. High levels of protein can activate the m. TOR pathway and influence leptin levels leading to worsening leptin resistance and inflammation. As long as healthy fats, proteins and carbs are balanced the diet is excellent - but it does require some manipulation and personalization. Does it work? Many of my patients start with a modified paleo type of diet and then manipulate their macro molecules based on their symptoms and lab tests. The paleo diet is a great starting point because there is plenty of information including recipes and diet guides available on the internet to help with transitioning your diet. In addition - according to group data 8. Be careful when switching to this diet if you rely heavily on healthy sources of carbs for energy - sometimes switching to low carb diets can make patients with Hashimoto's worse. I'm glad you asked.. It's an acronym that stands for: Fermentable Oligo- Di- Monosaccharides And Polyols.
